The newborn dolphin calves do not sleep for the first few months of their lives. So the Mumma dolphins have to stay awake along with their babies to ensure their safety. Dolphins like us need oxygen to live. They can stay in the water for approximately twenty minutes after which they have to return to the surface if they want to live. Dolphins sleep with their one eye open which keeps half their brain awake. This makes them conscious of any predators and to travel to the surface. But still, the brain gets the rest that it needs. When they have provided enough rest to the one side of the brains, the dolphins swap sides. They close their eyes and let the next half of the brain rest.
